Global warming, considered a global issue, is the climate and ecological damage caused by human activities and increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Greenhouse gases thicken the atmosphere, creating a blanket effect over the Earth, which raises the Earth's temperature. As the effects of global warming become more pronounced every day, the Earth's temperature, sea levels, biodiversity, ecosystems, agricultural activities, national borders, livelihoods, and many other human-related areas are affected. Factors such as population growth, the intensity of industrial activities, poor environmental policies, and low enforcement of regulations negatively impact climate change.

2. Carbon Footprint

Carbon footprint refers to the amount of CO2 emissions generated as a result of all activities during the production-consumption process of an individual, organization, event, or product. The carbon equivalent of six primary gases, including carbon, which causes significant damage in the atmosphere, is calculated, and the carbon footprint of the product, organization, activity, or individual is determined. Based on how close or far the result is from the targeted carbon amount, carbon reduction or preservation strategies are developed.

The European Green Deal is of critical importance for Turkey. As Turkey is a Customs Union partner with the EU, its commercial activities are highly dynamic. According to the Ministry of Trade's 2021 data, the European Union holds a 41% share of Turkey's $93 billion export, making it the largest partner in Turkey's total exports. Therefore, due to both the intensity of trade relations and the sustainable development goals, Turkey will also be part of the European Green Deal.
What is the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)?
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a new carbon tax system by the European Union that will come into full effect in 2026. CBAM imposes additional costs on products with high carbon emissions, such as cement, steel, aluminum, fertilizers, hydrogen, and electricity, that are exported to the EU. The aim is to prevent carbon leakage and promote low-carbon production on a global scale.
